Look at the profession descriptions. Play the one that interests you.
You gave us no information, we can only give generic answers. What other games have you played? What sort of characters did you play in those games? Melee, ranged, or spell-based? Offense or Defense? Etc.

All the professions in this game are pretty much on the same level when it comes to being able to complete quests and missions, and defeat monsters, so there isn't any "invincible" character, nor any very weak one, if this was your question. You have got at least 4 character's slots, try different professions and see which you prefer most.

Mesmer is for advanced playsers and Monk is hard work. The rest of the core classes will quickly lure you into their appropriate play style.

Mesmer is in no way for advanced players - especially with this upcoming skill update.
Just give a few different professions a go and see what you like best - but remember that the endgame play can be a lot different from the beginning of the game. |

It's pretty much all the same.
Melee is at a bit of disadvantage in some missions since you are required to carry stuff around and you can't make melee attacks when carrying something. |

that should give you an understanding of what each class is and does and which one you would be best suited for/most like to play as. |

And visit our Campfire section. The stickied basics threads in each subforum will give you more information on the profession and, in some cases, compare the value of the available secondary professions.
Don't be afraid to ask questions in the game and the wiki is available with F10 or Help on the menu. Come back here again when you have specific questions that aren't urgent as we love to help.
